I think its important to note that DITA is not the only type of structured content. There are other XML content models (I write in non-DITA XML for some jobs). So why you may not need to learn DITA, understanding the principles could help you adapt to new tools more easily. And some of those principles can help you structure your content even in unstructured authoring tools.
